By nine o’clock that night, the party was in full swing. Paper lanterns hung from the eaves of the castle, and some floated on the lake. Spooky Celtic music played on a real, old-fashioned record player. The sweet scent of caramel and apples hung in the air.

The kids raced from one game to another. They played darts, they bobbed for apples, and they flew kites. The kites had nothing to do with Halloween, but the kids wanted to take advantage of the wind. Apparently, it wasn’t windy very often in their home in Texas, which was called Cedar Lake.

Nora had offered to do a round of fireworks, and the kids were delighted with that idea. As soon as she stood in the clearing by the lake, a chill swept over her body.

She was being watched—and not by one of the dragon shifters or the humans that were here. She shivered and looked around, but she saw no one.

She took a deep breath to clear her mind. She didn’t need to hold her hands in the air to create the fireworks, but she thought the kids might enjoy some theatrics.

She started with the colors of the Irish flag. She sent bursts both green, white, and orange into the air. Next, she created the American flag for all their visitors, sending streaks of red, white, and blue into the night sky.

Declan cried out, “Do the Texas flag too!”

“Give me a hint. What colors do I need?”

Her phone chimed. An image of the Texas flag appeared on the screen. After she finished with all their flags, she did some Halloween colors. She made images of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns and then a parade of little ghosts.

For the finale, she created a dragon shifter that breathed fire into the air. Her audience cheered and clapped and screamed, and the kids jumped up and down.

Little Shannon, Declan’s younger sister, came running toward her. “Wub your magic,” she said as she launched herself into Nora’s arms.

Nora held onto her. Shannon had shed her ghost costume and was covered in caramel from the apples. She laid her head on Nora’s shoulder. This would be what it was like if she and Niall had a child. There’d be a little person that depended on them.

The thought was less shocking the second time around.

They would have a little half-shifter, a little shifter who could transform into a dragon. He or she would be able to fly and breathe fire and would never be harmed by normal childhood injuries or illnesses.

What would the child inherit from Nora? Dragon shifter genes seemed to be passed on in a very precise way. They were dominant. She knew of no pairings where one parent was a witch and the other a shifter. They would be creating a new kind of child. Was she prepared for that? It might be a moot point because Niall might not be interested.

Nora savored the feel of Shannon in her arms. If Niall wasn’t interested in her, then she would probably stay single for the rest of her life.
